What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), also known as Lymphatic Massage, is a gentle and specialized technique performed by our Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) and Registered Physiotherapist. This service is billed as PHYSIOTHERAPY.
MLD specifically targets the lymphatic system, which lies just beneath the skin. Unlike regular massage, MLD does not use creams or oils and involves light, rhythmic movements that promote the natural flow of lymph fluid throughout the body. It helps to reduce swelling (edema), drain excess fluid and waste products from tissues, and improve overall circulation and immune system function.
This treatment is effective for:
- Lymphedema
- Post-surgical swelling
- Post-cancer treatment recovery
- Inflammation or fluid retention
- Chronic venous insufficiency
- General detoxification and immune support
MLD is a relaxing, non-invasive therapy that encourages the body's natural healing processes without deep pressure or discomfort.
What to Expect:
- Treatment is most effective when performed directly on the skin, so patients are encouraged to wear or bring appropriate clothing (e.g., loose-fitting garments, shorts, or tank tops).
- You may be asked to remove some clothing for access to the treatment area, but draping is always provided for comfort and privacy.
- No lotions or oils are used, and the technique feels more like gentle skin stretching or brushing, rather than deep tissue massage.
- Your therapist will assess your individual needs and may recommend frequency and duration based on your condition or treatment goals.
- Most clients find the treatment deeply relaxing, often experiencing a sense of lightness or reduced swelling even after the first session.
