Who pays for Physiotherapy?

The cost of Physiotherapy services are the responsibility of the patient.

If your employer provides health insurance through extended health plan benefits , Inertia Physio+ will provide direct billing to your insurance company. A list of insurance companies that we can bill to to is available here. Direct billing to your benefits plan is available for Physiotherapist, Registered Massage Therapist and Acupuncture treatments.

We do not require a doctor's referral but your insurance company or benefits plan may. It is the client's responsibility to confirm what treatments are included in their insurance coverage. We are not able to provide billing for Kinesiology or Athletic Therapy. If your extended health insurance covers Kinesiology or Athletic Therapy, the clinic will provide you with a receipt so that you may submit a claim for the cost for your sessions to your benefits plan yourself.

If you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident and require Physiotherapy, your auto insurance will cover the cost of your initial assessment. Based on the results of your assessment and your available coverage, you may be approved for additional Physiotherapy sessions, Massage Therapy, chiropractic adjustments and other treatment modalities.

What if I have to pay out of pocket for Physiotherapy?

If you do not have Physiotherapy coverage and must cover the cost of Physiotherapy treatment on your own, let your physical therapist know.

While being able to receive manual therapy on your condition is preferred, we understand that medical expenses can be a financial burden. Your Physiotherapist will work with you to ensure that you get the most from your sessions and come up with strategies to help you supplement all the benefits of treatments on your own at home.

Is Physiotherapy worth the money?

Simply, YES! From the initial assessment to follow-up Physiotherapy sessions the expertise of your registered Physiotherapist will provide you with both pain relief and education to keep you active and going forward. Whether you are an athlete or do administrative work, we could all use expert advice on ergonomic adjustments and lifestyle changes to reduce pain and improve our existing level of wellness.

Patients who undergo hip replacements and other major surgeries will generally see a better recovery time and better results when adding orthopedic Physiotherapy treatment to their recovery plan. The same is found for patients recovering from injury. Our goal is to get you back to the activities you love and maintain a good quality of life.

Your Physiotherapy session at Inertia Physio+ will be one-on-one with your Physiotherapist in a private room.

The amount of sessions recommended will be dependent on the patient's condition. Patients will be given customized exercises and stretches to do at home between sessions. Most exercises do not require any special equipment. If fitness balls or resistance bands are required, we have some available at the clinic at a reasonable price. Our Physiotherapists want your to have the best recovery possible. This means working with you to achieve the most benefits possible during your sessions without any unnecessary cost from gadgets and machines that have not been clinically proven to give results.

Is Physiotherapy covered by OHIP?

The Ontario Health Insurance Plan covers some Physiotherapy costs for some Ontarians, however, not all Physiotherapy clinics can direct bill to OHIP. As a small independent business, Inertia Physio+ does not have billing with OHIP. Clients will be responsible for their own treatment costs.

Who qualifies to have physiotherapy coverage through OHIP?

OHIP covered Physiotherapy is intended to assist Ontarians for whom the cost of Physiotherapy is a barrier to needed help and to give immediate care to those recovering from major surgery.

Clinics that provide government funded Physiotherapy will provide an initial assessment, treatment plan, and Physiotherapy sessions for any patient with a valid OHIP card and who is:

  • 19 years or under
  • 65 years or older
  • have had an overnight hospital stay in the last 12 months for a condition requiring Physiotherapy treatment. (individuals of all ages are eligible)
  • a recipient of the Family works or Ontario Works or the Ontario Disability Support Program (individuals of all ages are eligible, an OHIP card is not required)

What Services Are Covered By OHIP?

Services available will vary by clinic. Physiotherapy treatments may be offered in the hospital or at an out-patient Physiotherapy clinic. Most Physiotherapists will be able to give an assessment and follow up for patients with flare-ups, chronic conditions, recent injury or illness. Post-operative rehabilitation is also a standard service.

You may seek assistance from your doctor or medical care professional for a referral to more specialized services such as pediatric physical therapy, congenital disabilities, or long term rehabilitation. If you need a registered Physiotherapist who can offer Physiotherapy in a patient's home, contact Home and Community Care Support Services to make arrangements.

Some hospitals will have additional supports available such as fall prevention classes that can enhance physical therapy treatment for many patients.

There are Physiotherapy clinics that have additional fee-based services available to compliment your physical therapy:

  • chiropody
  • complementary and alternative medicine
  • Registered Massage Therapy
  • chiropractic treatment
  • occupational therapy
  • personal training
  • speech and language therapy
  • sports medicine

When to seek government funded Physiotherapy.

A physician will refer a patient for Physiotherapy if symptoms are worsening after a previous injury, accident, chronic condition or surgery that led to a decline in function or movement.

Referrals

A nurse practitioner or doctor's referral will be required by patients to receive government provided health care.

Is physical therapy covered by The Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB)?

Ontario employers, or employers who operate within Ontario typically require WSIB coverage for their workers. If a workplace accident happens, WSIB coverage provides employers with legal protection, and provides a variety of benefits to injured workers.  Physiotherapy is one of those services.

As a small independent business, Inertia Physio+ does not have billing with WSIB, clients will pay their own Physiotherapy costs. We will treat clients who have experienced a workplace injury and provide the required reports and forms for the client to submit their claims directly to WSIB. Please inform us at the time of booking if your visit is related to a workplace accident so that we may match you with a physical therapist who can best assist you.

We are here for you
