Knee Replacements Physiotherapy: Symptoms & Treatment

Knee replacement surgery can be a life-changing procedure for those suffering from chronic knee pain and limited mobility. Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the recovery process, helping patients regain strength and mobility in their knees and improving their overall quality of life.

Total knee replacements are performed when Osteoarthritis has reached a level of degeneration that results in significant pain and reduction in function rendering you incapable of participating in your activities of daily living.  During the surgery, all joint surfaces will be replaced with metal.

After a total knee replacement, you will be encouraged to resume walking and bending your new knee as soon as possible.  You may experience a great deal of pain and stiffness as your body heals from the internal work, the stiches and the swelling that is created.  Your Physiotherapist or Athletic Therapist can work with you to reduce the pain and swelling, restore normal movement to the joint, as well as build up strength in the joint and surrounding muscles.  Treatment will include joint mobilization, scar mobilization, soft tissue release, and passive range of motion.  Customized exercises and stretches will be prescribed as your Physiotherapist or Athletic Therapist help guide you back to normal activities.

Massage Therapy can be beneficial after total knee replacements as well.  Your Massage Therapist can help with swelling removal and general soft tissue loosening as well as reducing scar adhesions following the surgery.  Massage Therapists and Physiotherapists or Athletic Therapists can work together to help you achieve an optimal outcome.

As with all injuries, this information is simply a guide, and it is always best to check in with a Physiotherapist or Athletic Therapist to have a personalized assessment and hear recommendations for what you and your body may specifically need.
