Repetitive Strains Physiotherapy: Symptoms & Treatment

Repetitive strain injuries are a common problem in modern society, often caused by prolonged computer use, manual labor, or sports-related activities. Physiotherapy can be an effective treatment for these injuries, helping patients to manage their symptoms, prevent further damage, and regain their normal range of motion.

As with all injuries, this information is simply a guide, and it is always best to check in with a Physiotherapist or Athletic Therapist to have a personalized assessment and hear recommendations for what you and your body may specifically need.

What is Repetitive Strain Injury?

Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is an umbrella term used to describe a range of injuries that affect the muscles, tendons, and nerves in a specific body part. These injuries occur due to repetitive movements or prolonged use of the affected area. RSI can be classified as cumulative trauma disorder, overuse injury, occupational musculoskeletal disorder, repetitive injury, repetitive motion injury, and repetitive trauma.

Causes of RSI

Repetitive strain injury can be caused by various factors, including repetitive movements, excessive strain, static loading, overuse, force, or holding a dysfunctional posture. These injuries are common in athletic training and especially in the workplace.

Symptoms of RSI

The symptoms of RSI can vary depending on the affected body part, but some common signs include:

  • Pain, tenderness, or soreness in the affected area
  • Stiffness or limited range of motion
  • Tingling or numbness in the affected area
  • Weakness in the affected area
  • Swelling or redness in the affected area
